More About Steve Otto Construction
Born in Ohio to a Mennonite family whose trade was building, at age seven departed
with his family on a church mission to Paraguay with little more than a suitcase for each family member. There, in
challenging and primitive conditions, the family pursued its building roots. Yet the absence of electricity held a
blessing for Steve as he learned to work and build with only simple hand tools, shaping the skills of an expert
craftsman in the young boy.
At 21, Steve returned to the United States, later settling in Tennessee in 1991
where he established his own contracting company. Over the years, he would build 22 homes establishing his
reputation as a highly skilled and innovative craftsman with an unusual attention to fit and finishing details.
"Wood is a God-given material, and I like to make wood talk, said Steve.
Deeply rooted in the family trade of building, Steve has a lifetime of experience
in carpentry from using hand tools to operating large machinery. In 1991, with son's Ryan and Nathan, they
ventured on their own as Steve Otto Construction starting in Rock Island, Tennessee repairing boat docks. Our
first project consisted of carrying concrete mix in 80 lb bags down 150 steps to repair a dock that a flood had
damage. Word spread throughout the river-side homes of the rescued boat dock and our quality workmanship,
generating new business.
